the winter months approach, national fire reports point to an increase
in the number of clothes dryer fires in residential buildings.
Horry County Fire Rescue Capt. Brian Archibald said this trend can be attributed to additional strain put on dryers because fewer people will dry their clothes outdoors during the winter months and the clothes we dry tend to be made of heavier materials.
To remove the added strain, Archibald said cleaning and maintaining the appliance is critical.
Particularly, cleaning lint, dust, and dirt from the dryer since those pollutants tend to be the biggest culprits of dryer fires because they prevent them from operating efficiently.
When the dryers do not operate efficiently, there is a greater risk that a fire could start, according to Capt. Archibald.
He says there are two clear signs that a dryer isn't functioning properly.
