Chambersburg Area school board to vote on revised dress code

The Chambersburg Area school board will take another crack at a uniform policy Wednesday night in a version that reflects community input from previous meetings.The board will vote during Wednesday's 7:30 p.m. meeting in the district's Administration Building, 435 Stanley Ave. The last meeting had a packed house in the same room.Superintendent Joe Padasak didn't issue a statement about the smaller venue by presstime Tuesday. Community members filled extra seats at the Oct. 24 meeting in the same room. A September Open Forum had at least 500 visitors and was held in the high school auditorium.In its latest round of revisions, the Administrative Guidelines for Dress and Grooming include several changes stemming from discussion at the Oct. 24 meeting.
The proposal includes two changes to tops or shirts: Tops would be permitted in solid colors or with patterns such as stripes, paisley and plaid. Students would also be permitted to wear crew neck shirts."I disapprove of the latest proposal because of the fact it still does not allow a girl to be a girl," said board member Joan Smith on Tuesday. "Crew necks are fine for boys, but they are anything but flattering on girls. There is nothing wrong with a soft scoop neck line or v-neck that covers the girls. I also feel this dress code is non-condusive to the elementary kids. They play hard and have no place to change for gym. What's wrong with athletic pants?"
Board member Kim Amsley-Camp requested the addition of patterns for shirts/skirts/dresses at the last board meeting which followed a 50-minute public comment section."Although the school district has been working on this for two years, for whatever reason, the community was unaware of it until recently,Mostly this dress is wear western side women. Before, all shirts needed to have either a turtleneck or a collar. The board voted to add crew necks at the meeting, but when the proposal was tabled, it nullified the vote.Helman and Blowers have publicly supported a new policy."The majority of the people that I've talked to in my church, wherever, have been, overall, supportive," said Helman.Patterns were also added as an option under dresses, jumpers and skirts. Denim was added as an option for clothing before the last board vote.The proposal was sent back to committee by a 9-0 vote. Earlier at the same meeting, a request to table the vote was rejected, 5-4. Board members Stanley Helman, Fred Rice, Anne Boryan, Joe Tosten and Norman Blowers voted against tabling the measure.
